The historic approach to solving poverty of throwing money at it in the form of benefits is not working. With spiralling welfare costs, made worse by the Government’s anti-growth and anti-ambition policies, we urgently need to re-think how we help those in need. Earlier this week, as part of my role on the Work and Pensions Select Committee, I stressed the need to look at the root causes of poverty: such as improving life skills, having a job, proper financial education and discipline.
