Peter receives a lot of correspondence from residents across Mid Leicestershire who rise early, work long hours and provide for their families; all while their taxes continue to increase to fund a spiralling welfare bill.
During an Opposition Day Debate this week, Peter pointed out how the Government is creating a culture where people think it is okay for others to fund their lifestyles.
Peter acknowledges there should always be a safety net in place, but it should only be for people that genuinely need it.
Thankfully the Conservatives have a plan to fix the broken welfare system by:
- Cutting welfare spending by £23billion
- Restricting benefits for Non-UK Nationals
- Reducing fraud through the reintroduction of face-to-face assessments
- Clamping down on people with mild health conditions abusing the system
After his speech Peter said:
The welfare system is out of control, and it is threatening the Nation’s finances.
The Government’s inability to cut the benefits bill has worsened the culture of people thinking it’s okay to sit at home all day doing nothing; all while hard-working taxpayers foot the bill.
My Conservative colleagues and I will make work pay, stop the unfair gaming of the system and trim the welfare bill back to a sustainable level.
Peter will continue to fight to ensure taxpayer money is spent efficiently.
