LOROS Hospice is a local charity that supports more than 2,500 residents across Leicestershire every year; by delivering high-quality and compassionate care and support to terminally ill patients, their family and carers.
On Friday, I met their interim Chief Executive, Camilla, to hear more about the excellent work they do, and take a tour of the facility.
I was shocked to hear that despite being able to provide 31 beds, the hospice is currently only able to operate 18, due to rises in National Insurance contributions and the National Living Wage. This has placed immense pressure on the service.
Speaking to patients Simon and Lisa this really hit home: They described how LOROS is more than a place to be cared for as you approach the end of your life, but also a safe space for family members, which takes much of the worry off of patients - so it’s even more vital that the Government properly supports our hospices.
That’s why following my visit, I asked the Chancellor directly on the Floor of the House of Commons, if she would reconsider the measures she introduced, that have had a directly negative impact on LOROS.
