Tonight the Government introduced legislation to reduce the voting age to 16.
Under the plans a 16-year old would legally be able to determine who governs the country, but not able to; legally enter binding contracts such as buying and renting property, purchasing alcohol, serve in the Armed Forces without parental consent, or make independent medical decisions.
Following the vote, Peter said:
Lowering the voting age to 16 will create clear contradictions in society, and carries the potential for legitimacy of our elections to be called into question. Simply put, it is a terrible idea, put in place by a Government scrambling for votes.
