On Tuesday 16th September Peter led the Opposition response to the SNP 10-Minute Rule Bill that would see the removal of the 2 Child Benefit Cap.
The Bill, proposed by Aberdeen North MP Kirsty Blackman, would see the welfare bill rise by £4.5bn a year and by removing the cap that the last Conservative government introduced to control welfare spending.
Labour MPs were instructed to abstain on the vote meaning that the Bill will now proceed to its Second Reading in November.
Included as a sponsor of the Bill is former Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn amongst a plethora of left-wing MPs.
Speaking after the vote Peter said
It beggars belief that the Labour Party instructed its MPs to sit on their hands and allow this legislationt to proceed to Second Reading; particularly given Jeremy Corbyn's sponsorship of it.
Only the Conservative Party believe that we need fundamental reforms to our welfare system: to promote aspiration, incentivise work and ensure that the root causes of poverty are addressed.
