n 2022 my constituent Emma Johnson experienced a terrible tragedy. Having just gone into labour with her youngest child, she received a phone call that her parents had been killed in a car crash – the driver of the over vehicle had no license, and no insurance.
Because of the current legislation, the perpetrator was charged with causing ‘death by careless driving’ as opposed to that of ‘dangerous driving’, which resulted in a far lower criminal sanction. I argue that this is not only reckless but also dangerous.
That’s why I introduced an Amendment to the Crime and Policing Bill which would mean anyone caught driving without license that causes a road-traffic fatality would be considered as ‘causing death by dangerous driving’.
Emma has been fighting since the verdict to ensure no other family has to suffer the injustice she faced on that harrowing day.
I unequivocally agree with her campaign and will continue to fight for her cause so no one has to go through what she went through.
