Many readers will know the Government plans to reorganise local government across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Under their proposals, existing Boroughs, Districts and County Councils would be abolished, and in turn replaced by unitary authorities.
Recently, Peter received a letter from Leicester City Mayor, Sir Peter Soulsby, outlining the City Council’s position on this reorganisation - it detailed their preference for two authorities: one covering the “built up area” of Leicester City including many of the settlements adjacent to the city’s existing boundaries; and a second authority covering the “market towns and more rural areas”
In his letter back to the Mayor, Peter made clear once again that he cannot support this proposal.
Much of his constituency borders the city: from Braunstone Town, Leicester Forest East, and Kirby Muxloe, to Glenfield, Anstey and Birstall. Residents of these villages value their unique identities and have different needs and priorities vastly different to the challenges faced by the city.
Peter said “I am completely against any expansion of the City and the loss of beautiful Mid Leicestershire villages to an enlarged City Council. I will continue to do all I can to ensure that local residents are properly consulted and that their voices are heard.”
