Since Peter first learnt of the horrific killing of much-loved Braunstone Town man, Bhim Kohli, he has been working with Bhims' daughter, Susan, to ensure there is greater accountability placed on child offenders, and their parents – last week, Peter tabled two amendments to the Sentencing Bill that would have done just that.
Unfortunately, despite cross-party support for this change, the Government voted against it.
Peter said:
“It is beyond disappointing that the Government chose to vote down this much-needed reform to our law.”
“As a society we need to start holding parents more accountable for the criminal actions of their children, and send a clear message to young offenders, that if you are capable of committing abhorrent crimes, then you are capable of facing the consequences of your actions, like any adult would.”
“Today was a disappointing day, and once again we have seen the very worst of party politics getting in the way of pragmatism.”
Peter will continue to do all he can in his capacity as the local MP to fight for proper justice for Bhim Kohli.
