On Tuesday 16th December Peter challenged the Justice Secretary on the Government's plans to scrap trial by jury for certain offences.
Speaking in the Chamber Peter asked
The Justice Secretary may have complete faith in the supposed impartiality of the Judiciary, I however, do not.
We have seen a plethora of cases, particularly involving freedom of speech where the judiciary has arguably been influenced by political correctness and the virtue signalling of bodies like the Sentencing Council.
If his proposals are designed, as he says, to reduce delays to justice: Why do they not include a sunset clause?
Sadly the Justice Secretary refused to answer the question.
Peter will continue to scrutinise, and oppose, this proposal as the Justice Bill continues its passage through Parliament.
