Peter Bedford MP has voiced serious concerns in Parliament about the Government’s proposed “Youth Experience Scheme” with the European Union, warning that it risks reintroducing free movement under another name.
Speaking in response to the Prime Minister’s statement on the EU-UK deal, Peter pressed for clear assurances that the scheme would not undermine the UK’s post-Brexit border controls. He highlighted the risk that what is being presented as a cultural exchange programme could, in practice, lead to a significant increase in immigration with limited oversight.
Peter emphasised that the people of Mid-Leicestershire voted to take back control of borders and that any attempt to reintroduce open access to the UK, particularly for young EU nationals, would be seen as a betrayal of that mandate.
He warned that temporary schemes often evolve into permanent arrangements and stressed the importance of Parliamentary scrutiny and democratic accountability. Peter has made it clear he will be watching closely to ensure that the Government sticks to its promises and upholds the will of the British public.
