Peter Bedford MP recently spoke in the debate on the Public Authorities (Fraud, Error and Recovery) Bill voicing his support for measures to tackle fraud and protect taxpayers’ money. While welcoming the Government’s intent, he also backed several amendments aimed at strengthening the Bill’s fairness, transparency, and enforcement powers.
Peter stressed the importance of upholding the social contract between taxpayers and the state, warning that public trust would be undermined if fraud is not dealt with decisively. He argued that departments like the DWP should have the same enforcement capabilities as other agencies and called for stronger action against those using social media to promote benefit fraud.
He urged ministers to consider proposals that would ensure safeguards for vulnerable claimants, improve oversight, and reinforce accountability.
Peter concluded by calling on MPs to work across party lines to improve the Bill and ensure the welfare system works for those who genuinely need it—not those who exploit it.
