This morning in the Work and Pensions Select Committee I asked the Pensions Minister what is being done to tackle the ever-increasing Government spend on welfare, and what we need to do to get more people back into work. I also took the opportunity to ask him whether the Government still plans to bring their Welfare Bill before Parliament next week despite huge opposition from their own backbenchers and the real possibility it could be blocked.

Should the Government cut welfare funding to properly fund our brave armed forces?

Friday, 17 April, 2026
This year the Government plans to increase benefits spending by £18bn, taking the welfare budget to more than five times what the UK spends on defence annually.

That increase could pay for:
15 Royal Navy Frigates,
220 fighter jets, or,
250,000 more soldiers!
