On Friday 1st December Peter joined colleagues from across Leicestershire for a joint fundraiser with guest speaker Lee Anderson MP.
Lee, the Member of Parliament for Ashfield, addressed local residents about what he saw as the key priorities for Government.
Particularly ensuring that illegal migration (via small boat channel crossings) is stopped, and that legal migration is reduced to sustainable levels.
Speaking after the event Peter Said:
I welcome Lee Anderson to Leicestershire and I respect his no-nonsense, plain talking approach to many of the issues facing the country today.
It is clear that the vast majority of the British people want an end to the illegal boat crossings - which in my view do not represent genuine asylum claimants. How can someone fleeing a safe European country like France be described as fleeing persecution - this is lawyers stretching the definition of asylum beyond what any regular person would accept!
I would also like to see Government take action to bring down legal migration. My plan to better invest in jobs & skills of our own people, as well as reform the International Students VISA route is long overdue. Excessive levels of migration contribute to pressures on local services, as well as the demand for housing. This issue is one of my top priorities of focus - whichever party is in Government!
