Many residents were shocked and appalled at the lenient sentences handed down to the killers of Bhim Kohli.
Mr Kohli was a much-loved family man in Braunstone Town who was attacked as he was simply walking his dog through Franklin Park last September.
A 15-year-old boy and 13-year-old girl were sentenced to seven years custody and a three-year rehabilitation order, respectively. Having been on bail the young girl will serve no time in prison for her involvement in the killing.
Peter Bedford MP has met with Mr Kohli’s wife Satinder, and daughter Susan, to fully understand the details of the crime, and how he can support their fight for justice.
It’s clear that fundamental change is needed.
He wrote to the Attorney General asking for these sentences to be reviewed as ‘unduly lenient’. Whilst he is pleased there will be a referral for the male’s sentence, he is hugely disappointed that they have rejected any review of the 13-year-old girl’s sentence, who will face little consequence for her involvement in taking a life.
Susan also has two main objectives, which Peter is happy to take forward as the local MP:
- Changes to the law to ensure that parents are held accountable for the criminal actions of their children, and
- Changes to sentencing guidelines for young offenders to ensure that more robust custodial sentences are issued for similar cases in the future.
